Carolina Cameo

Judy began her craft more than twenty years ago on pieces turned for her by Boyd S. Hilton. After his death various potters including Lisk, Ellington, B. R. Hilton and others have produced pots for Judy to decorate. In addition to her Cameo ware, Judy produces both underglaze painted and cobolt slip ware decorated pottery. The items pictured above were turned by BR Hilton. The top image is a picture of the old Hilton Homeplace and the roll over image is Boyd S. Hilton.

Cameo is a rare art form. A bas-relief design is built up, layer upon layer, by painting freehand with porcelain. The brushwork is applied to wheel turned pottery creating a variety of forms. The exterior glaze colors are green, brown, blue, and blue green. Red and black are occasionally used for special pieces.

Carolina Cameo pottery is functional as well as decorative, feeling at home in a contemporary setting as much as on favorite antique furniture. Care for it as you would any fine bisque porcelain, wash in warm sudsy water, rinse and allow to air dry.

Custom work on request and shown by appointment only. Judy participates in the annual Blackburn Community Pottery Festival held at the Hilton homeplace. That sale on the second Saturday of October every year is the best opportunity to view the bulk of Judy's work.
